South of France's Director of Marketing and Product Development, Candace Kaufman, recently wrote and an informative article, "Buyer Beware, are your Beauty Products Killing you?"

South of France has taken a vow to make better-for-you products that are just as effective, if not better, than our competitors. "Buyer Beware..." calls out harmful ingredients that you will NOT find in South of France products, but that are VERY commonly found in products that many people use day in and day out. Candace reminds us all that "having great skin doesn't have to come at a price" and "having beautiful skin starts by taking care of yourself from within." As much as we all worry about break outs and wrinkles, we should worry twice as much about the types of products we use on our bodies, and their ingredients, which essentially seep into our bodies. There is a way to promote healthy skin without inducing poor health.

People all around the world are recognizing the toll that the human race and its man-made creations are taking on our planet. Consequently, in the past few years, there has been a conscious move towards leading more sustainable lifestyles. We at Good Health understand the importance of connecting to our audience personally and making ourselves accessible to you all in as many ways as possible. That is why we have a presence in the blog world, on Facebook, Twitter and a couple more social networking sites. To take things a bit further, we have decided to unveil the "voice" behind most of our social media efforts, hence the title of this post.

My name is Archele and I'm a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill. I have a degree in Advertising from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication and I am the Social Media Coordinator for Good Health Natural Products. That means I am here to engage with you and to share all that I am learning about this company and its three divisions, which all produce natural products.

I am the primary host of Good Health's three Twitter sites and Facebook fan pages: Good Health Natural Foods, South of France Body Care and South of France Spa Naturals. On those pages, as well as here on the blog, you will find fun facts, discussion questions, polls and the latest deals within the company. I hope that you will join me on my personal page as well!

CLEANSERS ARE IMPORTANT

Whether you wear make-up, take daily jogs, or make frequent trips to the grocery store, your skin may be clogged with bad particles that are lurking in the air that we breathe every day. That is why facial cleansers are so important. A cleanser is a facial care product that is used to remove make-up, dead skin cells, oil, dirt and other types of pollutants. By unclogging pores, cleansers are able to promote healthier, clearer skin while preventing skin conditions such as acne.

CHOOSING A CLEANSER

There are a ton of cleansers in stores and online. When choosing a cleanser, or any other product, it is crucial that you check the ingredients to be sure that you are selecting a product that is free of dangerous chemicals that can harm your skin and body. An example of such ingredients are parabens. Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in skincare products, and have been linked to cancer. They come in many forms including, butylparaben, ehtlyparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben.

All-natural cleansers, such as those produced by South of France, use nature's safest ingredients to ensure a product that does its job as a cleanser without the risks of irritation and contamination presented by synthetic ingredients.

USING YOUR CLEANSER

A little goes a long way. Massage only a dime-sized amount of your cleanser onto your moistened face and neck, lather and rinse thoroughly. Use your cleanser daily- morning, night or both- for better results.

Fun in the Sun- Protect Yourself!

Fourth of July weekend begins tomorrow and many people will be cooking out, poolside or headed to the beach. This also means that people will be spending more time stuck in traffic; they will be spending more money on traveling expenses, and they will be spending more time in the sun.

Exposing yourself to the sun without using the proper precautions can lead to damaging effects on your body and skin, including but not limited to sunburn, melasma, sun spots and skin cancer.

While South of France does not currently produce sun screens, I wanted to emphasize the importance of sun protection; moreover, I wanted to share some NATURAL recipes for sun protection. Organic Body Care Recipes by Stephanie Tourles provides a number of all natural concoctions to protect oneself from the sun. Below are a couple that I found most interesting.

SUNSCREEN BODY OIL

1/4 CUP jojoba base oil
1/4 CUP neem base oil
1/4 CUP pure aloe vera juice
1/4 CUP sesame base oil
3 TEASPOONS vitamin E oil
1 TEASPOON anhydrous lanolin

Tourles writes:

Add all ingredients to a storage container. The aloe vera juice is water-based and will separate out (as if you were making an oil and vinegar salad dressing), so the formula must be vigorously shaken each time prior to use.

No refrigeration is required if the product will be used within 3 weeks. If refrigerated, the oil will keep for 4 to 6 months. It will thicken when chilled but will liquefy when allowed to warm to room temperature.

APPLICATION TIPS: Apply to the entire body immediately before and repeatedly during sun exposure. The base oils won't leave an oily film if massaged in thoroughly (unless too much is applied).

This recipe should yield approximately 1 1/8 cup

ALOE AFTER-SUN RELIEF SPRAY

1 CUP aloe vera juice
20 DROPS lavendar essential oil
10 DROPS rosemary (chemotype verbenon) essential oil

Tourles writes:

Place all ingredients in a storage container and shake well to blend. Please keep refrigerated and use within 4 to 6 months.

APPLICATION TIPS: Spray on skin as often as necessary.

This recipe should yield 1 CUP

These recipes are made to protect your skin without the harmful chemicals found in most products sold in stores. No time to make an all-natural sunscreen? Research to find sunscreens that contain the least amount of toxic ingredients as possible.

Keep these recipes in mind for your next vacation, but be sure to use SOME type of protection.

"Check the Ingredients"

In the October 20, 2009 inStyle.com article, "10 ways to detoxify your life," posted on CNN.com/living, number 7 urges readers to "Check the ingredients" in efforts to "avoid parabens."

Parabens are chemicals found in many products, especially cosmetic care products, that are used as preservatives to stop nasty bacterial growth. They come in many forms, including butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben. Companies choose to use these chemicals because they are very cheap.

These cheap preservatives that stop microscopic growth, however, are thought to contribute to another horrific process- cancer. Studies have shown that parabens have the ability to mimic estrogen in the body, primarily impacting the endocrine system and potentially creating an increased risk of cancer. Studies have also found parabens present in breast cancer tissue samples.

Natural alternatives to the use parabens include grapeseed oil and Vitamin E, which are more costly, but definitely more healthy.

It is amazing that something so commonly used can have such negative effects. The few seconds that you take to "Check the ingredients" could have life-long benefits!

CNN Health Names "5 toxics that are everywhere"

In the May 31, 2010 CNN Health article written by David S. Martin, "5 toxics that are everywhere: Protect yourself," some of the most commonly found toxins were outlined, along with their effects on the human body. The toxins addressed are:

BPA - Bisphenol A
Phthalates
PFOA
Formaldehyde
PBDEs - Polybrominatedd diphenyl ethers

The first two toxins, BPA & phthalates, are commonly found in skincare products on store shelves and in your homes. In January, 2010, the FDA declared “some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children.”

According to the CNN article, "Phthalates are considered endocrine disrupters," and may lead to a number of developmental issues.

It is important for you to know about these toxic agents and the effects that they may have on your body. At South of France, our Spa Naturals line is already free of toxins such as BPA and phthalates and we are currently redesigning our body care line so that it will be 100% BPA- and phthalate- free as well. This new line of product should be availabe August 2010. The worry of whether or not you are contaminating your body should not be an issue when you are simply trying to take care of your skin.

Thank you for filling out the request form for a free sample of our Spa Naturals skincare line. Unfortunately (and unexpectedly!) our offer was picked up by FreeSnatcher.com last night without first having obtained our permission. This resulted in an absolutely overwhelming customer response numbering in the tens of thousands that we were not prepared for - in fact, the offer generated so many responses that our survey form and program were shut down by Google less than twelve hours after freesnatcher.com posted the offer!

While we would like to honor as many of these sample requests as possible, we only have 10,000 samples to send out of our new skincare line.
